Dropping Off
Stansted Airport is notorious across the UK for its strict enforcement of traffic rules and high charges for drop-offs. This section contains the information you need to avoid large unexpected fines in the post when you get home.
The Express Drop-Off area is just outside the terminal doors and is strictly for quick unloading. There is a required minimum drop-off fee. From the March 2026 tariff update, Stansted charges £10.00 for up to 15 minutes and £28.00 for up to 30 minutes. That makes it a very expensive kerbside option if you are not prepared to drop and go immediately.
This area uses a barrier-free ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) camera system. You pay at the barrier with a card or contactless payment. Cash is not accepted. Frequent flyers, local residents, or taxi drivers can also set up an AutoPay account online in advance so that funds are automatically deducted, avoiding any delay at the exit.
In this area, the airport has a significant police presence. In addition to the steep fees for exceeding your 15-minute limit, there is a £20 “reappearance fee” for dropping someone off, leaving, and then returning to the drop-off zone within 30 minutes. This is specifically intended to prevent drivers from circling the airport to avoid paying for parking.
Most importantly: Never stop on the approach roads or roundabouts. The roads approaching the terminal are red routes. Even a brief stop to drop off a passenger will result in an immediate £100 Penalty Charge Notice (PCN). This fine is often reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days, but it is strictly enforced by mobile CCTV vans patrolling the perimeter 24 hours a day.
If you want to avoid the £10 charge entirely, Stansted offers an excellent alternative.
Travellers can drop off passengers free of charge for up to 1 hour in the Mid Stay Car Park.
This is the best way to drop off passengers without a fee and completely stress-free. Once you have dropped off your loved ones in the designated zone, they simply take the quick, free shuttle directly to the terminal building. It adds about 10 minutes to the journey but saves the full drop-off charge.
Do not stop in the Express Drop-Off zone to pick people up. It is only for dropping off passengers, and you will be penalised for waiting. For arriving flights, we recommend waiting in the Short Stay car park. You can park, check the flight status on your phone, and meet your passengers safely in the arrivals hall without the anxiety of a ticking 15-minute clock.

Park And Stay
Getting up early to catch a Ryanair or easyJet flight and negotiating the M11 in the dark is hardly the perfect start to a holiday. With a Stay, Park & Fly package, you can arrive the night before, enjoy a good meal, have a full night’s sleep, and wake up just minutes from the check-in desks.
If you want maximum convenience, both the Radisson Blu and the Hampton by Hilton are directly connected to the terminal by a covered walkway. Wake up, enjoy a premium buffet breakfast, and walk to airport security in less than five minutes. The Radisson Blu is especially famous for the dramatic Angels’ Wine Tower in the lobby and the excellent Collage restaurant. When you book a parking package with these premium hotels, your car will usually be kept in a secure, official car park during your trip.
If you are looking for budget-friendly family options, the Premier Inn and Holiday Inn Express are ideal. Located just a short shuttle ride from the terminal, they offer great value, comfortable family rooms, and breakfast included. It is much cheaper to leave your car parked at these hotels (or their associated secure compounds) than at the terminal-connected hotels.
Another good budget option is the Travelodge, which is very close to the terminal. It offers the reliable, no-frills comfort the brand is known for, along with heavily discounted parking packages – perfect for those who only need a clean bed before an early morning 6:00 a.m. departure.

Stansted Airport is situated in Essex, approximately 40 miles north-east of Central London, and is very well connected to major regional road and rail networks.
The airport is easily reached via the M11 motorway. If you are coming from London and the South, exit at Junction 8a. If you are approaching from Cambridge and the North, exit at Junction 8. Simply follow the prominent signs for Stansted Airport. Sat-nav users should use the main terminal postcode CM24 1RW.
If you have booked off-site parking through an independent provider, you must carefully navigate to the provider's specific compound address provided in your Britain Car Parks confirmation email, not the main airport terminal. If you go to the terminal first, you will have to navigate the one-way system in the airport, wasting time and possibly incurring an accidental Express Drop-Off charge.
If you are travelling without a car, the Stansted Express offers a direct rail link from London Liverpool Street, with trains running frequently and the journey taking just 47 minutes. Alternatively, National Express coaches run 24/7 from London Victoria and Stratford directly to the airport’s dedicated lower-level bus station.
At The Airport

Queues can still be substantial during the summer peak, although this area has been recently modernised to speed up the process. It is strongly recommended to purchase a Fast Track security pass to avoid the queues.
Stansted Airport is committed to providing a seamless experience for passengers with reduced mobility. The Short, Mid, and Long Stay car parks have dedicated Blue Badge bays, located as close as possible to bus stops or pedestrian exits. Blue Badge holders receive a discount when using the Express Drop-Off zone. You must pay the normal charge at the barrier and then apply online for a refund or discount with evidence of your Blue Badge and travel documents.
Motorcycle parking at Stansted is not free, but the airport caters well to motorcyclists. Pre-booking your space in advance is essential, with a 50% discount for motorcyclists. Discounted parking is only available in the Short Stay Orange car park and the Long Stay Zone Q car park. You can safely leave your bike in these purpose-built areas.
