The Express Set Down

The Express Set Down, outside the terminal, charges for stays of up to 30 minutes, per 2026 guides. There is no barrier.

Cameras read your plate on the way in and out. Pay online or by phone on 03450 175046 by midnight the day after. Miss it and a £100 Parking Charge Notice goes to the registered keeper, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.

The free drop-off at Mid Stay

The airport runs a free drop-off area at Mid Stay, with a free bus to the terminal.

2026 guides put the free limit at 60 minutes. The bus runs 24/7 and takes about seven minutes to the terminal, so allow an extra half hour compared with stopping at the kerb. It works for pick-ups too: your passenger rides the bus to you. Mid Stay's postcode is CM24 1PZ.

Picking up from Short Stay

For meeting a flight, the airport's Short Stay charges run from £13 for 30 minutes.

Short Stay lets you park, walk into Arrivals and help with bags, without the 15-minute clock of the Express Set Down. For a long delay, it caps your cost better than repeated trips round the airport.

Blue Badge holders

The airport says every vehicle using the Express Set Down must pay, including Blue Badge holders.

Blue Badge parking is available close to the terminal in the car parks. For a passenger who needs help inside, park in Short Stay and walk them in, or book assistance with the airline before you travel.

When a flight is late

Wait away from the terminal roads until your passenger has their bags.

Use the free Mid Stay area, or Short Stay if you want to meet them inside. Driving into the Express Set Down too early risks the jump to the higher charge, and there is nowhere to wait at the kerb.

The train instead

The Stansted Express and other trains stop at the station beneath the terminal.

A lift to a station on the line, then the train, avoids all these charges. For solo travellers with light bags it is often the simplest option, especially from London.

Taxis and hire cars

The charge applies to every vehicle, and it follows the number plate.

Ask a taxi firm whether its fare includes the drop-off charge. With a hire car, pay the charge yourself the same day, as rental companies often add an admin fee to unpaid charges.

When meet and greet makes more sense

For a trip, a handover can cost less than two drop-offs plus fuel.

Charging nearby

The InstaVolt hub at Priors Green, Takeley, has six rapid chargers, open 24 hours.

It is off the airport site, a few minutes away, and useful for a top-up while waiting for a delayed flight. It is run by InstaVolt, not the airport, and charged separately.

Finding the Express Set Down

Follow the signs for Drop Off as you approach the terminal.

The Express Set Down sits directly in front of the terminal, with several lanes. Some meet and greet operators, such as APH, use a marked zone within it for their handovers, so watch the signs for the general set-down lanes. Stop, unload quickly and drive out; the cameras start the clock as you enter.

Early morning departures

The set-down lanes are busiest in the hour before the first wave of flights.

Stansted has many flights leaving in the early morning. Queues on the approach can eat into the 15 minutes, so have your passenger ready to step out and bags easy to reach. On a busy morning, the free Mid Stay area can be quicker overall.

What a lift really costs

A drop-off and a pick-up can cost more than a few days' parking.

Two Express Set Down visits, plus the fuel for two return journeys, can match the price of several days in Mid Stay with our code. For a short trip, parking is often the cheaper and simpler choice.

Coaches and buses

Stansted has a large coach station beside the terminal.

National and airport coach services stop right outside, and some off-airport operators use the coach station for their return pick-ups. For travellers from London and East Anglia, a coach can replace the car altogether.

Paying the charge

Pay online or by phone on 03450 175046, by midnight the day after your visit.

There is nothing to pay at the kerb and no barrier to stop you forgetting. Pay as soon as you are home, or set a reminder on your phone before you drive off. The charge is linked to the number plate, so the registered keeper receives any penalty, whoever was driving.

Regular visitors should check the airport's payment page for account options that take payment automatically, which removes the deadline altogether.

A charge that has kept rising

Stansted's drop-off charge has gone up steadily over recent years.

Older guides quote lower figures, and some local advice still suggests ways round the charge that no longer work. Use the airport's own page and recent guides, and treat any quoted price older than a year with caution.

Passengers who need help

Park and walk in with them rather than rushing a kerbside stop.

The 15-minute Express Set Down leaves little time to help someone to the check-in desk. Short Stay lets you park and go inside together, and the airport's special assistance team can be booked through the airline in advance for help through security.
