For a week or more, the choice is between the APH and Airparks site at Slip End, APL's park and ride, and the airport's Mid Stay and Long Stay.

The spread is about £20 over eight days from cheapest to dearest. That is small enough that the transfer, the keys and your car's height should decide it, not the price alone.

The airport's Long Stay, bus and all

Long Stay runs a free bus about every 20 minutes, 24 hours a day, with a ride of around ten minutes to the terminal.

Mid Stay: long stay without the bus

Mid Stay is a walk of about ten minutes and the cheapest car park the airport runs on our dates.

It has no height restriction and free motorbike bays. The trade is simple: walk ten minutes instead of waiting for a bus. With light luggage, most people are at the terminal sooner from Mid Stay. See the Mid Stay guide.

Slip End: the lowest prices

APH and Airparks share one site on Grove Road in Slip End, and sell Drop & Go and Self Park there at matching prices.

The bus to the terminal takes 12 to 14 minutes. Size limits are tighter than at the airport's own car parks, so vans are out. See the APH and Airparks guide.

APL's park and ride

APL's park and ride is arranged by phone: you call ahead, park at its car park, keep your keys and are taken to the airport.

Resellers list a 2m height limit and £15 a day for extra days. See the APL guide.

Tall vehicles on a long trip

Only the airport's Mid Stay and Long Stay have no height limit.

For a holiday with a roof box or a van, the airport's own car parks are the only safe bets. Measure the car as it will be loaded, with any roof box or bike rack fitted, before you book. A few centimetres over a limit means turning round at the barrier.

What turning up would cost

Luton's gate prices are steep: £40 a day in Mid Stay after the first hour, and up to £75 a day in the terminal car parks.

Eight days in Terminal Car Park 1 without a booking would cost £600, per the airport's tariff. Pre-booked with our code, the cheapest long stay option costs less than a tenth of that. Book ahead for anything longer than a quick stop.

Timing the journey in

Allow 30 minutes from the car park entrance to the terminal door with any bus-based option, and 15 from Mid Stay.

1. Park or check in. At Slip End, Drop & Go takes a few minutes at the machine.
2. Wait for the bus. Up to 20 minutes at Long Stay.
3. Ride in. About ten minutes from Long Stay, 12 to 14 from Slip End.
4. Walk to check-in. Buses stop close to the terminal.

Keys: a quick decision

You keep your keys at the airport's car parks, Self Park and APL's park and ride. Drop & Go takes them.

Drop & Go is cheaper because staff can move cars around the site. For keyless or high-value cars, some drivers prefer to hold on to their keys and pay the few pounds more for Self Park.

Long trips with a family

With children and a week's luggage, the transfer matters more than a few pounds.

A bus with cases and a pushchair is manageable, but it adds a wait at both ends. Mid Stay's ten-minute walk suits families travelling light. For the least effort after a long flight, compare the airport's Priority Parking, where you drop your keys in Terminal Car Park 1 and walk three minutes, against the long stay prices here; over a week, the difference may be smaller than you expect.

When the flight home is late

Delays add days, and days cost money if you have not amended your booking.

At the airport's car parks, extra time is charged at the gate tariff. APL lists £15 a day for extra days on its park and ride, per a reseller. Contact the operator, or amend the booking with us, as soon as you know your return date has moved.

Winter departures

Early flights in winter mean dark, cold car parks.

The airport's own car parks are patrolled round the clock, per the airport, and Mid Stay and Long Stay are well used at every hour. Leave a scraper and de-icer on the passenger seat for the trip home, and note your zone or bus stop so you are not searching for the car in the dark.

Where your car stays

The airport's car parks are Park Mark certified, per the airport. The Slip End operators describe CCTV, patrols, fencing and 24/7 staff.

London Luton Airport says its own car parks are Park Mark certified, as assessed by the police, and patrolled around the clock. The off-airport operators describe their own security, which we report as their accounts rather than checking it ourselves.
