Four ways to stop at Newcastle
Newcastle gives drivers one free option and three paid ones for a quick stop. The free one is a few minutes' drive from the terminal; the paid ones are right outside it.
Free for up to an hour and a half at Callerton Parkway, with a shuttle to the terminal.
Directly outside the terminal, charged from the first minute.
A few minutes' walk, the cheapest paid stop close to the doors.
For vehicles over 2.0 metres or with more than seven seats.
Short Stay 1 also takes short stops, at a higher rate than Short Stay 2. Stopping on the roads around the airport is not an option: the approach is a camera-enforced red route.
The Express car park
Express is the drop-off and pick-up car park immediately outside the terminal, charged in steps.

Express is ticketless. Cameras record your plate on the way in and you pay on the way out. It has a 2.0m height limit and takes vehicles with up to seven seats. For a quick kerbside goodbye, ten minutes is plenty; for meeting a flight, the steps add up quickly.
The Airport Waiting Zone at Callerton Parkway
The Waiting Zone gives up to 90 minutes' free parking, around the clock, with a free shuttle to the terminal.
The zone sits next to Callerton Parkway Metro station, a few minutes' drive from the terminal. It opened in January 2026 for taxis, minibuses and private cars, and the airport says it was built to ease congestion as 2026 shapes up as its busiest year. The shuttle leaves the zone at quarter past and quarter to each hour, and leaves the terminal on the hour and half past. It is electric and fully accessible.
For a pick-up, wait in the zone until your passenger has landed and collected their bags, then either drive round to Express for a short paid stop or let them take the shuttle to you. For a drop-off, your passenger rides the shuttle to the terminal and you head home without paying.
Callerton Parkway is not Callerton Parking
Two very different places share the Callerton name. One is the airport's free short-stop zone; the other is a commercial car park for holiday parking.
The Airport Waiting Zone at Callerton Parkway is free for a short wait and meant for drop-offs and pick-ups. Callerton Parking is an off-airport car park where you leave the car, and your keys, for a trip. Resellers even give an address on Callerton Lane for its check-in. Put the postcode from the right booking into the sat-nav.
Short Stay 2 for a short stop
Short Stay 2 costs £4 for up to 15 minutes and has no height limit. It is the cheapest paid stop within walking distance of the doors.
Until January 2026, the first 15 minutes here were free. That concession ended when the Waiting Zone shuttle started, and many older guides have not caught up. After 15 minutes the charge climbs in steps much like Long Stay's. For a stop of more than half an hour, the Waiting Zone is the better bet.
Short Stay 1
Short Stay 1, outside the terminal entrance, takes short stops too, at a higher rate: £12 for up to 15 minutes.
It suits a driver who needs to walk a passenger in and see them to the desk, with a tall vehicle that cannot use Express. For a straightforward drop-off, Express or Short Stay 2 costs less.
Minibuses, vans and adapted vehicles
The Minibus and Van car park, next to Express, is for vehicles too tall for Express or with more than seven seats.
It has a 2.9m height limit and charges from £7 for up to 15 minutes. You pay at a pay-on-foot machine in the car park or the terminal, and leave through Short Stay 1. A specially adapted vehicle over 2 metres carrying a disabled passenger is sent here too, but pays the Express tariff rather than the van rate, per the airport.
The red route
The roads around the airport are a red route: no stopping on the double red lines.
Newcastle City Council enforces it from the A696 roundabout next to the airport along the B6918 and Callerton Lane, with static and mobile cameras and civil enforcement officers. Enforcement began on 21 October 2024. The penalty is £70, cut to £35 when paid within 21 days.
Pulling in on a verge to wait for a text from arrivals is exactly what the cameras are there to catch. The Waiting Zone exists to make that unnecessary.
Cards, not cash, at the exits
From March 2026, the car park exits stopped taking cash.
Pay by debit or credit card at the barrier. The airport says designated payment machines remain for anyone who needs to pay another way, but have a card ready. A contactless phone payment is the quickest way through.
Blue Badge holders
Every Newcastle car park has disabled bays, and standard charges apply.
Bays cannot be reserved. Display a photocopy of your badge on the windscreen, as the airport checks these bays and issues notices to vehicles without one. The Waiting Zone shuttle is fully accessible, and the airport's passenger assistance team can arrange help through the terminal. Book that with your airline before you travel.
Coaches and the Controlled Area
A Controlled Area in front of the terminal is reserved for the airport's own taxis, selected bus operators and airport vehicles.
Coaches and other passenger vehicles with 22 or more seats must pre-book at least 24 hours ahead, at £19.99 per vehicle, and the airport treats those bookings as non-flexible. Ordinary cars and taxis from other firms cannot use it.
The Metro instead of a lift
The Tyne and Wear Metro runs to a station at the terminal.
A lift to any Metro station, then the train, avoids every charge on this page. Callerton Parkway, beside the Waiting Zone, is the stop before the airport, which makes it a handy meeting point on the way home too.
Charging while you wait
An ultra-rapid charging hub sits at Callerton Parkway, next to the Waiting Zone.
Fastned opened it on 16 December 2025, with 12 bays of up to 400 kW, open 24/7 with no booking needed. For an electric car, a wait for a delayed flight can double as a top-up for the drive home. It is run by Fastned, not the airport, and charged separately.
