Charging at the airport's car parks

The airport's pages for the products we sell do not list EV charging.

That applies to the JetParks, Mid Stay, the multi-storeys and the handover products, as their pages stand. Leave home with enough range for the drive back, or book a product that charges the car while you are away.

APH Park & Ride with EV Charging

APH charges your car to full capacity during your stay at its Sharston site.

You hand your keys and your own charging cable to reception, and the car must arrive with at least 5% charge. The bus to the terminals runs every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day. See the APH guide.

What charging adds

On our sample dates, APH's EV option costs about £35 more than standard Park & Ride over eight days.

That buys a full battery for the drive home. Compare it with the cost of a rapid charge on the way back, and with the time a charging stop would add after a long flight.

How the EV option works

Charging is handled at reception.

1. Arrive with 5% or more. APH's minimum.
2. Bring your cable. Hand it in with your keys.
3. Take the bus. About ten minutes to the terminal.
4. Collect a charged car. Keys and cable back from reception.

What to tell the staff

Make charging easy for whoever parks the car.

Turn off scheduled charging in the car's app so it charges when plugged in.

Planning range

A car parked for a week loses a little charge, more in cold weather.

Without a charging product, arrive with enough range for the drive home plus a margin. Manchester's winters can take a noticeable bite out of range for a car left outdoors for a week or two.

Plug-in hybrids

Plug-in hybrids can use the EV option too.

A hybrid's smaller battery fills quickly, so the charge on return should be full. Whether the extra cost is worth it depends on how much of your drive home runs on electric power.

Other ways to come home charged

Plan a stop on the way home when you do not book charging.

Many drivers charge at home the night before travelling. With a full battery at departure and a short drive home, most cars will not need a top-up. For a long drive after landing, plan a public charging stop on your route before you set off.

Booking the EV option

Book the EV version rather than standard Park & Ride; the two are separate products.

Both appear in our search. Choose the one with EV charging, check the price with the code applied, and pack your cable the night before. When plans change, amend or cancel up to 72 hours before arrival on bookings made with us.

Collecting a charged car

On return, you ride the bus back to Sharston and collect your keys and cable at reception.

Check the charge level on the dashboard before you leave, and that the cable is in the car. APH says the car is charged to full capacity during your stay. Call or text APH when you land, as for the standard product, and wait at bus stop H outside your terminal.

Charging at home before you go

A full battery at departure solves most of the problem.

Charge overnight before the trip, warm the cabin while the car is still plugged in, and note your range on arrival at the car park. With a typical drive from within the North West, most electric cars will make the return trip without a top-up. APH's option suits longer drives, winter trips and anyone who wants one less thing to think about.

A note on 2026

Terminal 1 closed in March 2026, and the airport renumbered its car parks into a P1 to P16 scheme at the same time.

Older guides may mention chargers at car parks that have since changed. Check the current product before relying on charging.

Why charging at the airport matters

Coming home to a flat battery after a long flight is the scenario to avoid.

Most electric cars cover the drive home from Manchester easily if they leave home full. The risk is a long trip in cold weather, a long drive after landing, or a car that was already low. For those, a product that charges while you are away removes the worry and the stop on the way home.

Keys and cables

The EV option is a key handover, so APH holds both your keys and your cable.

Label the cable with your name and booking reference, and check it comes back with the keys. Remove any accessories you do not want moved with the car, such as a portable charger, and keep the charge port cover clean and easy to open.

EV option or standard park and ride

The two products share a site, a bus and a check-in.

Cold weather and batteries

Batteries lose range in the cold, and a car parked outdoors for a week feels it most.

For a winter trip without booked charging, leave home with a full battery and plan for the return drive to use more energy than usual, with heating on. A charged car on return avoids that planning altogether.

Manchester Airport describes itself as an IPC accredited parking provider and uses number plate recognition across its car parks. It does not publish a Park Mark statement, so we do not claim one. The off-airport operators describe their own security, and we pass on their accounts without having inspected the sites.
