The zone is a short walk of about five minutes from the terminal, per the airport. Use the postcode LU2 9QT to reach the airport, then ignore the sat-nav and follow the drop-off signs.
Paying, and what happens if you don't
Payment is online only, by midnight the day after your visit. Miss it and a £95 enforcement charge follows, cut to £55 if paid within 14 days.
There is no barrier to remind you, so it is easy to drive away and forget. Set a phone reminder before you leave the zone, or pay as soon as your passenger is inside. The charge is linked to your number plate, so hire cars and borrowed cars count too.
How the zone changed
The zone opened in July 2024 with barriers, then went barrier-free and cashless in January 2025.
That change is why the payment deadline matters. Older guides describe paying at a machine on the way out, which no longer applies.
The free option: Long Stay
The airport's Long Stay car park is free for up to two hours for drop-offs and pick-ups.
A bus runs from the car park to Bay B at the terminal about every 20 minutes, day and night, taking around ten minutes. For a pick-up, park in Long Stay and meet the passenger at the terminal, or ask them to ride out to you. It is the most generous free window at Luton by a long way.
Mid Stay is no longer free
The free 15 minutes in Mid Stay has gone for good.
Some websites still say you can drop off free in Mid Stay. The airport now charges from the first minute: £15 for up to an hour.
Dropping off at Parkway instead
A lift to Luton Airport Parkway station, then the DART to the terminal, avoids the drop-off zone altogether.
The DART runs from Parkway to the terminal in a few minutes, from £4.90 per person. For a solo traveller with light luggage, that can cost less than the drop-off charge. For a family with cases, the zone or Long Stay is simpler.
Blue Badge holders and assisted travel
Blue Badge holders and passengers with booked assistance get 30 minutes free in Terminal Car Park 1.
That is often the easiest way to help someone into the terminal: park, walk over the footbridge together and walk back within the free half hour.
Picking up without paying twice
For a pick-up, the 30-minute maximum in the zone is the trap.
Baggage reclaim can easily take longer than 30 minutes. Wait in Long Stay, where the free period covers most delays, and drive round only when the passenger is outside. Or park in a terminal car park and meet them in Arrivals.

Taxis and private hire
Taxis and minicabs use the same zone, and the charge applies to them too.
Ask your taxi firm whether the fare includes the drop-off charge. With a hire car, the charge is linked to the number plate, so the hire company may pass on an unpaid charge with an admin fee.
Coaches and minibuses follow their own signs at the airport, so check with the operator before a group trip. For a group sharing one car, a single drop-off is cheaper per person than any other option, which is worth weighing against parking for the week.
Early mornings
Luton's first departures leave very early, and the zone is busiest in the hour before them.
On summer mornings, queues can build on the approach roads. Leave a margin, and have your passenger ready to get out as soon as you stop, with bags easy to reach. Pay the charge as soon as you are back on the road.

- Meet the passenger. Ride the free bus to the terminal, or ask them to ride out to you.
- Leave within the free period. The barrier reads your plate.

Late-night arrivals
Late flights are when the free option matters most.
A delayed evening arrival can run well past the zone's 30-minute cap. Waiting in Long Stay costs nothing for the free period, and the car park is patrolled around the clock, per the airport. Keep your phone charged so the passenger can tell you when they have their bags.
